Thrifty Car Rental at Winnipeg Airport
Winnipeg International Airport (YWG) is one of the busiest airports in the country of Canada, and has grown to over three million passengers per year. It is currently ranked as the eighth largest in the country for passenger traffic, and is important in terms of trans-border and international traffic as well. The airport is equipped with US border preclearance facilities. Thrifty is one of the car hire companies available, and their services are used by leisure and business travellers. They have a wide selection of vehicles for hire, and very competitive car rental rates.
Although a number of car hire companies can be found nearby to the main terminal building of Winnipeg Airport, there are a few that have off-airport offices. These companies run shuttles buses to and from the airport for their customers, which may be used free of charge. Thrifty has shuttles to the airport, as they are located at the Sandman Hotel. The trip to their offices will only take a few minutes, and their shuttles are frequently available. There are also often phones in the arrival area that passengers may use to call their car rental company. The buses used for transport are able to accommodate luggage, and may be equipped to transport a disabled person. It is recommended to find out all details regarding Thrifty’s shuttle at the time of vehicle reservation.
When the passenger arrives to collect his/her vehicle, a valid drivers license and major credit card will be required. Driving licenses printed in English, in particular those from the United States, are usually accepted. Canadian licenses are, of course, fine as well, besides the G1 and G2 licenses, which are only accepted by certain rental locations in Ontario. Winnipeg Airport is located in the province of Manitoba, just west of the city centre of Winnipeg. Drivers who come from foreign countries may need to acquire an International Driving Permit before leaving for Canada. The credit cards accepted by the car rental companies include American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Diner’s Club Int’l and a few others, and are used at the start of the rental period for a hold of the estimated car rental costs. The same card may be used for the final payment due, or a debit card with the Mastercard or Visa logo can be used.
The primary renter of a vehicle will also need to meet the minimum age requirements of the rental location, which in this case is 21. However, drivers younger than 25 may not be permitted to hire vehicles from all categories, and will also pay higher rental rates for young drivers insurance. The insurance is an additional fee that could amount to around $35.00 CAD per day of car hire, and per additional young driver listed on the rental contract. Keep in mind that second-drivers will also incur an additional fee, and should meet all the same requirements as the primary renter. Thrifty also permits a disabled person who is unable to drive to be the primary renter, provided that he/she is accompanied by an able driver with a valid drivers license. In this case, however, the second-driver is free of charge. Hand controls may also be requested for a person with a lower limb disability, and Thrifty hand controls are free of charge.
Thrifty Winnipeg International Airport has cars to suit the needs of all airport passengers. There are smaller and cheaper models in the Economy and Compact categories, such as the Toyota Yaris and Toyota Matrix, as well as Minivans that can seat up to seven people, such as the Dodge Caravan. Popular vehicles for hire also include the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Volkswagen Passat and Toyota Camry. A person who requires a more elegant vehicle may be able to drive the Chrysler 300 or the Chrysler 300C, and the SUVs available from Thrifty include the Toyota Rav 4, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. Even convertibles are available, such as the Chrysler Sebring.
Any vehicle can be hired with additional items of equipment. Parents of young children should arrange a child seat with Thrifty. They come in various sizes, to suit infants, toddlers or older children, and are in good condition. It is required by law in Canada for all persons in a vehicle to be wearing seatbelts. A satellite navigation system can be hired as well, and is recommended for travellers who are unfamiliar with the Winnipeg area. The GPS units have an easy-to-use interface, a selection of languages, offer turn-by-turn directions in voice or visual mode and can provide useful information regarding traffic conditions in the area. They are also usually pre-programmed with thousands of points of interest, including medical services, restaurants, tourist attractions, places of business, golf courses, shopping centres and much more.
Thrifty one way hire services are available to customers who are not planning to return to the airport. One way hires are therefore when the rented car is delivered to an alternative rental location. The return location can be nearby or in another city. This service may be more expensive than an ordinary rental. If the driver is going to travel into the United States of America, a cross-border rental will need to be arranged. A wide range of additional services are available from Thrifty as well, including their Multi-Month Rental Plan and programs for small and large businesses or companies.
